258 The American Polish Committee (1831)
An organisation supporting the Poles against Russia between 1830 and 1850: the American
American Polish Committee was founded at the end of 1830 or at the beginning of
1831 in New-York.

Howe came in relation with the New-York Committee in May 1831.
which was in relation with La Fayette and Cooper in Paris, had a reunion in the
Clinton Hall (New-York) on the 5September 1831; Howe received the mission to
bring to Europe the money collected in the USA in order to help the insurgents
of the kingdom of Poland, but he reached France in October, after they had been defeated.
#At the beginning
of 1832, Howe met Joachim Lelewel, president of the Polish National Committee in Paris.
#At the end
of February 1832, Howe was in Prussia,
inquiring about the methods for teaching blind people and at the same time distributing money to
Polish refugees; he was arrested on the 3rd of March and incarcerated
(without charge) in isolation during 4 weeks ; the American ambassador in Paris was
informed about his disappearance by Howe’s friend William Rives; after a
press campaign, Howe was liberated and expulsed from the kingdom of Prussia
(coming back in 1843, he was not allowed to go through the frontier, evenfor a touristic trip).
