Défauts
Le principal défaut, à mon avis, est que les chapitres d’histoire politico-militaire (« événementiels ») ne sont pas simples à lire pour quelqu'un qui ne connaît pas déjà bien l’histoire de la Pologne.
Les chapitres sont en général dépourvus de subdivisions ; les dates ne sont pas toujours clairement précisées (la présentation étant dans l’ensemble chronologique, mais pas systématiquement, il est parfois difficile de savoir si on est telle année, ou la suivante).
Une autre source de difficultés est que les protagonistes ne font pas l’objet du minimum de présentation permettant de les situer chronologiquement et de connaître leurs fonctions à telle ou telle date (par exemple, les hetmans et autres hauts dignitaires de Pologne, les ambassadeurs des diverses puissances impliquées, etc. Un exemple : à plusieurs reprises, est évoqué un certain « Biron », protégé par la cour de Russie et placé par elle à la tête du duché (en principe polonais) de Courlande. Aucune note n’indique ne serait-ce que son prénom, sans parler de ses dates essentielles, ni de ses relations à la famille française des Biron. Il s’agit en fait d’un roturier allemand, Ernst Bühren (1690-1772), alias Ernst von Biron, favori d’Anne 1ère de Russie, puis proche de Catherine II ; il prétendait être parent des Biron.

Intérêt
Malgré ces défauts et sa relative ancienneté, cet ouvrage semble être, en ce qui concerne la période qui nous intéresse de l’histoire de la Pologne (1764-1850), le plus important des ouvrages généraux publiés hors de Pologne.
Pour cette période, il offre une matière répartie sur 277 pages (chapitres 5 à 15), c'est-à-dire une bonne part de ce que la plupart des livres publiés en France offrent pour la totalité de l’histoire de la Pologne. Le livre de Daniel Beauvois, Histoire de la Pologne, Hatier, 1994, ne consacre que 80 pages à la même période (158 : Vers le premier partage à 237 : L'insurrection de 1863-1864).
